ye gotta roll with it

Had my first 'proper' day at school today..... and it was amazing!! Kengseng and I are in a massive high school with class sizes around 30ish, so we've been instructed to just observe this week, but today I was actually doing some teaching to ages 12-14!

Now, it was a bit chaotic. I didn't know the lesson materials beforehand, nor the students, nor the lesson plan. So, when the teacher, Marta, asked me to deliver some of the lesson, I was a bit taken aback, but I got stuck right in regardless. And this brings me to the title of the blog. In the words of Oasis (who would make terrible teachers, btw), "you gotta roll with it". I embraced the chaos and just went with it, delivering the lesson and going with the flow. Before long I had them doing TPR and elicitating some great answers. Engagement levels were high, which is the most important thing. The kids loved it and the teacher thought I did great - massive confidence boost!!

Spanish kids also love a bit of banter. They were asking me all sorts: who my favourite footbal team is, what age I am, who my brothers/sisters are etc. One kid even said I looked like Harry Styles (a great compliment, which I happily accepted). When I left the school, I felt like a bit of a celeb because all the kids were saying 'bye Mitch-ell' as I was walking down the street clutching my empty water bottle hahahaha.

I was rolling with the banter as well, it was amazing. I'm trying my best to not see the kids as my friends and still keep teacher and student boundaries - but they're so bloody charming!!!! I can't help it. Wee legends the lot of them.

Anyway, hope all youse out there are also rolling with it, embracing the chaos and leaning into discomfort - cause this is how we get better!! Buzzing to get stuck into more.
